ABOUT GRAVITATION

Intuition for composition, dynamic shapes, carefully selected colors. Astro’s works emanate a nebulous allure. In other words: Gravitation is caused by vaporized pigment morphing into interstellar objects. Gravitation condensates various celestial phenomena and dark matter of diverse aggregation states for the first time. Astro’s works oscillate somewhere between sculpture and painting with constant references to their origin – the big bang of Graffiti culture. In the early 2000s, Astro started his creative endeavor. Through continuous typeface analysis, Astro ended up dissecting letter structures into their atoms over the years. Again and again, Astro broke conventions of classical Graffiti. Eventually, he managed to establish his style. His polygonal shapes create a unique design vocabulary, independent of the mediums used. At first glance, somewhat hard, technical looks with a mechanical aura but always combined with warm, natural materials. In his multimedia works, Astro plays with opposition. Authentic performance from yards around the world is effortlessly translated to a white cube context without losing any charms. A dance on thin ice mastered with ease. The choice of materials alone reveals his attention to detail.

Reoccurring colors and authentic parts of train types, e.g., the beloved class 4020 of the ÖBB, are fragmented and reconstructed to create new objects. References to the Russian avant-garde, Malewitsch’s Suprematism, and Stylewriting with the stench of solvents are possible, depending on the respective reading. The publication “Schnellbahn” suffices as an excursion, which will be published in May 2021.
